What do I bring to apply for a passport or an identity card in Switzerland?

A passport needs a colour digital photo if your canton lets you bring one, and an identity card asked at the commune needs a paper photo that matches the template unless that commune takes the photo itself. You apply for a passport, an identity card, or both, online, by phone, or at the passport office of the canton where you live. An identity card on its own goes to the commune or the cantonal office, depending on the canton, and that office captures your data.

Papers this process lists
