What is an IRS Identity Protection PIN in the United States?
An Identity Protection PIN is a six-digit number: The IRS says it stops someone else from filing a tax return with your Social Security number or ITIN. Only you and the IRS know it. The IRS says anyone with an SSN or ITIN who can verify their identity can enroll, even if they do not have to file. A parent or legal guardian can request one for a dependent. The fastest way is the IP PIN section of your IRS online account. The PIN is valid for one calendar year, and a new one is issued each year. Enter it when you file Form 1040. The IRS says it will never ask for your IP PIN. A call, email, or text that asks for it is a scam. If you cannot enroll online, the same page lists Form 15227 and an in-person option. Confirm on the official page.
