When are the school terms for public schools in Ireland?

Primary and post-primary schools in Ireland follow standard breaks at Christmas, at Easter, and at mid-term in the first and second terms. The Department of Education and Youth publishes those breaks for the school years 2026/27, 2027/28, and 2028/29. Summer holidays are not standardised. A primary school must be open for at least 182 days, and a post-primary school for at least 166 days. Schools use extra days to set the start and end of the year. They normally reopen in the week of 1 September, and they may open the week before.
