What are the public holidays in Australia?
The Fair Work Act lists these public holidays: 1 January (New Year's Day), 26 January (Australia Day), Good Friday, Easter Monday, 25 April (Anzac Day), the holiday for the Sovereign's birthday on the day a state or territory celebrates it, 25 December (Christmas Day), and 26 December (Boxing Day). A state or territory can also declare other public holidays. If a state or territory law substitutes another day, that day is the public holiday. An employee may be absent on a public holiday in the place where they are based for work. An employer may ask them to work if the request is reasonable. They may refuse if the request is not reasonable, or if the refusal is reasonable. If they are absent, the employer pays their base rate for their ordinary hours that day. A person with no ordinary hours that day is not paid under this rule.
