What is an ITIN if I need a U.S. taxpayer number and I am not eligible for a Social Security number?
An ITIN is a 9-digit number the IRS issues for federal tax. The IRS says it is for a person who needs a U.S. taxpayer identification number and is not eligible for a Social Security number. An ITIN is for federal tax only.
