What is a National Insurance number if I already have the right to live in the United Kingdom?
GOV.UK says you can apply for a National Insurance number if you live in the United Kingdom, you have the right to work, and you are working, looking for work, or you have an offer to start work. You can start work before the number arrives if you can prove the right to work. The number stays the same for life. You do not need one to start an application for benefits, for a student loan, or for the EU Settlement Scheme. A biometric residence permit or an eVisa may already show a number. If you do not have one and you plan to work, apply only when you are in the United Kingdom. GOV.UK says this can take up to 4 weeks. Confirm on the official page.
