Does a lender have to tell me why it said no to credit in the United Kingdom?
MoneyHelper says only the credit provider knows the reason it refused credit, and it does not have to tell you why. You can ask. The same page says you can be refused even with a strong credit history, because the provider also looks at whether you can afford another payment. By law, each credit reference agency must give you a free copy of your statutory credit report. The page names four agencies: Experian, Equifax, TransUnion, and Crediva. Checking your own report is a soft search. It does not affect your score. A hard search happens when you apply, and it can stay on the report for up to two years. This page does not say you will be approved.
