How do I check a call that says a loved one needs money in the United States?

The FTC says a caller who claims to be a family member or a friend in trouble may be a scammer, even when the voice sounds right. Hang up. Then call that person on a number you already know. If you cannot reach them, call someone else in the family, even if the caller said to keep it a secret.
