Hotels and car rentals often place a temporary authorization hold on your card at check-in. It is not always the final charge. On a debit card, a hold can reduce the spendable balance in your checking account until the hotel releases it, sometimes days after checkout. On a credit card, it usually ties up part of your credit limit instead. Ask the business how much they hold and when it drops.
