How do I work out the cost of shares I bought in the United Kingdom?
HMRC says that from 6 April 2008, shares of the same class in the same company are held in one Section 104 holding. You add the costs of the shares in that holding. Each share is treated as acquired at the same average cost. If you sell only some of them, the allowable cost is the pool multiplied by the number sold, divided by the number in the holding. You can also deduct some buying and selling costs, including stockbroker fees and Stamp Duty Reserve Tax. Example only. In the HMRC example, the pool is 1,500 shares and £6,280. A sale of 700 shares takes £2,931 of cost. This page does not work out your tax.
