What is the adjusted cost base of shares I bought in Canada?
The CRA says the adjusted cost base is usually the cost of a property plus any expenses to acquire it, such as commissions and legal fees. You cannot add current expenses, such as maintenance and repairs. Shares of the same class are identical properties. You work out the average cost of each share whenever you buy more. A sale does not change that average. Example only. In the CRA chart, 100 shares bought for id="content",500 start at id="content"5 each. Buying another 150 shares for $3,000 makes the average id="content"8 across 250 shares. This page does not work out your tax.
