What is the cost base of shares I bought in Australia?
The ATO says you make a capital gain when your capital proceeds are more than your cost base. The cost base of shares is generally what you paid, plus certain incidental costs of buying and selling, such as brokerage, agent fees, and legal fees. Costs of owning the shares, such as interest on money borrowed to buy them, usually stay out if you claimed or could claim them as a deduction. If you give the shares away, you use the market value on that day as the capital proceeds. This page does not work out your tax.
