What is a cost base in Australia?
The ATO says the cost base of an asset is generally the cost of the asset when you bought it. It also includes certain other costs of acquiring, holding, and disposing of the asset. For most events, your capital gain is the difference between your capital proceeds and that cost base. Example only. If you sell an asset for more than you paid for it, the ATO says the difference is your capital gain. This page does not work out your tax.
