What do I need to open a bank account in the United States?
The CFPB says a bank or credit union verifies your name, date of birth, address, and an ID number before you open a checking account in the United States. That number is usually a Social Security number. Other types of ID numbers may also be accepted. You typically need a minimum deposit. The page does not name the amount. If the bank or credit union denies the account, the CFPB says it may be because of negative information on a consumer report about past checking accounts. You can ask for a copy of that report and dispute a mistake. This page does not pick a bank for you.
