What do I need to open a bank account in Canada?
The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada says you can open a personal deposit account even if you do not have a job, do not have money to deposit right away, or have been bankrupt. The bank confirms your identity in person, electronically, or by telephone. It asks for original identification, not a photocopy. One path is two documents from a reliable source. One shows your name and address. One shows your name and date of birth. The page lists a federal or provincial government ID, a recent tax assessment, a recent benefits statement, a recent Canadian public utility bill, a recent bank or credit card statement, and a foreign passport. If the bank refuses the account, it must give you the refusal in writing and tell you how to complain, including to the Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments and to the agency. This page does not pick a bank.
