When does a car need an inspection in New York?
The New York State DMV says a vehicle must be inspected every 12 months, and again when ownership is transferred. A valid sticker must be on the vehicle. It expires on the last day of the month punched on the sticker. Most inspections also check the onboard diagnostic system. Motorcycles, electric vehicles, vehicles less than two model years old, and vehicles more than 25 model years old are exempt from the emissions check. A dealer must inspect a vehicle within 30 days of the sale and before delivery. A purchase from a private seller gets a 10-day inspection extension from the registration date, and the previous sticker is not valid.
