When does a car need a smog check in California?
The California Bureau of Automotive Repair says a Smog Check is required every other year to renew registration. It applies to gasoline, hybrid, and alternative-fuel vehicles from model year 1976, and to diesel vehicles from model year 1998. Electric vehicles and motorcycles do not need one. Gasoline, hybrid, and alternative-fuel vehicles that are eight model years old or newer do not need one for registration renewal. The DMV renewal notice says if a Smog Check is required, and if it must be at a STAR station. A Smog Check is also required when the vehicle changes owner, and when it is registered in California for the first time.
