What is COBRA continuation coverage in the United States?
COBRA is a federal law: The Department of Labor says it lets you and your family keep job-based health coverage for a limited time after certain life events, usually at your own expense. It generally applies to group health plans from private employers with 20 or more employees, and to most state and local government plans. It does not apply to federal government plans or to church plans. Many states have a similar law for smaller employers, often called mini-COBRA. The plan has to give a written notice. Marketplace coverage on HealthCare.gov is a separate choice. Confirm on the official page.
