When does a car need a warrant of fitness in New Zealand?
NZTA Waka Kotahi says a new light vehicle that has never been registered gets a warrant of fitness for three years. Vehicles first registered anywhere on or after 1 January 2000 then need a warrant for 12 months. Vehicles first registered before 1 January 2000 get a warrant for 6 months. The label goes on the inside of the windscreen, on the driver's side. Get the next warrant before the date on the label. This page says the inspection rules change on 1 November 2026.
