What do I do if my car breaks down in New Zealand?
NZTA Waka Kotahi says that if your vehicle breaks down, indicate and steer it to a safe place off the road. Open the bonnet so others can see that you need help. Turn on the hazard lights, or use a safety triangle. At night, turn on the inside light. If you have no mobile phone and it is not safe to walk, wait in the car. Do not stand in the road. If you need help from other drivers, leave plenty of space for them to stop. On a motorway, do not stop suddenly. Steer as far off the road as you can, lift the bonnet and the boot, and if you can hang something white on the driver's door handle or window. Do not stand on the motorway.
