What car insurance must I have in the Netherlands?
The government says that if you have a car, you must take out third-party liability insurance under the Motor Insurance Liability Act. You need it if you own the car, if the registration is in your name, or if you have the long-term use of a vehicle you do not own, such as a long rental. In most cases it covers damage the vehicle causes. If you will not use the vehicle for a long time, you can suspend it with the RDW, and you do not need this insurance while it is suspended.
