What do I do if my car breaks down on a motorway in the Netherlands?
Rijkswaterstaat says that on a motorway, including a rush-hour lane, drive on to an emergency refuge, a car park, or a fuel station if you can. If you cannot, switch on the hazard lights and park in the verge. If there is a barrier, put the car as close to it as you can and turn the front wheels toward the barrier, while still leaving room to get out on the right. Stand with everyone in the verge or behind the barrier, as far away as you can, preferably in a high-visibility vest. Call your breakdown service from that safe place. If you are on an open rush-hour lane, or there is other immediate danger, call 112. For another unsafe situation, call 0800-8002. Give the road number and the nearest hectometre post.
