What do I do if my car breaks down outside a town in Italy?
Article 162 says that outside a built-up area, a vehicle stopped on the carriageway is pre-signalled with the mobile danger sign when, at night, the rear position lights or the hazard lights are missing or not working, and in any case, including by day, when people coming from behind cannot see it in time. The sign is the triangle, placed at the distance set in the regulation. While you place it, wear retro-reflective personal protection so you can be seen. You do not get out and walk on the road without a high-visibility jacket or braces. That also applies on an emergency lane and in a lay-by.
