What is ESI sickness benefit in India?
The ESIC standard note of January 2026 says sickness benefit is a cash payment during certified sickness, if contribution was paid or payable for at least 78 days in the relevant contribution period. The maximum is 91 days in two consecutive benefit periods, at 70 percent of average daily wages. A new spell that starts within 15 days of a spell already paid does not pay the first two days.
