What do I do if my car breaks down on a motorway in Ireland?
The Rules of the Road say that on a motorway you look for a marked parking area and move the vehicle onto the hard shoulder, as near to the left as you can. If you cannot, switch on the hazard warning lights. Where you can, step over the crash barrier and stay behind it, and have your passengers do the same. Use the roadside phone to contact the Motorway Operations Control Centre. That call shows your location. If you use a mobile phone, note the label on a nearby emergency phone, or a Location Reference Indicator or Marking. Do not place a warning triangle on the motorway. Do not try to repair the vehicle on the hard shoulder. Wear a high-visibility vest. Carry at least two in the vehicle. Leave by the left-hand door, and do not walk on the motorway. Wait for help on the embankment side, well behind the crash barrier. If you cannot follow that, stay in the vehicle with your seat belt on and the hazard lights on.
