How do I tax a vehicle in the United Kingdom?
GOV.UK says you tax a vehicle with a reference from a recent reminder, the log book (V5C) in your name, or the green new keeper slip if you have just bought it. You must tax it even when you pay nothing because it is exempt. If you keep it off the road, you register that and you do not tax it. The MOT must be valid when the tax starts.
