When does a car need an MOT in England, Scotland, or Wales?
GOV.UK says the MOT checks that the vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards. You must get an MOT by the third anniversary of its registration, and then on the anniversary of the last MOT if it is over 3 years old. Some vehicles need a test at one year old. An MOT lasts for a year. You can get one up to a month, minus a day, before it runs out and keep the same renewal date. You cannot drive or park the vehicle on the road if the MOT has run out, except to or from a repair, or to a pre-arranged MOT test. Vehicles registered in Northern Ireland follow different rules.
