What car insurance must I have in France?
Service Public says every motor vehicle meant for a public road must be insured, even when it is not being used, including in a private garage. That does not apply if the vehicle clearly cannot be driven, such as when the engine is removed or the wheels are missing. The minimum is civil liability cover, also called third-party insurance. It pays for damage to other vehicles, buildings, pedestrians, or passengers. The driver who is responsible is not paid for their own damage.
