What do I do if my car breaks down on a motorway in France?
Service Public says that on a concession motorway, only an approved breakdown company may work on the vehicle. Tell the motorway operator, who contacts that company. You can use an emergency telephone. Clear the carriageway as far from the traffic lanes as you can, and pre-signal the vehicle. The repairer is due within 30 minutes of your call from the emergency telephone. For a small breakdown, the repairer moves the vehicle and repairs it on the spot. If it cannot be repaired there, it is towed to the repairer's garage, or, if you ask, to a place less than 5 kilometres from the exit.
