What do I do if my car breaks down in Spain?
The DGT says that if a mechanical fault stops you driving on, stay calm and leave the road at the first safe place. If you cannot reach a service station or a rest area, stop on the right, on the hard shoulder, and use only as much of the lane as you must. Switch on the hazard lights. Leave the vehicle wearing the vest, on the side away from the lane, and wait for the tow truck off the road, with anyone travelling with you. If you cannot leave without risk, or there is no safe place to wait, stay inside with the seat belts on until help arrives.
