What is compulsory health insurance in Switzerland?
The Federal Office of Public Health says a person who settles in Switzerland must take out health insurance within three months of taking up residence, and the same deadline applies when parents register a newborn. Each family member is insured separately, and there is no family policy. If the person joins on time, cover starts from the residence date or the birth and the premiums are paid back to that start, while a late join starts cover only from the join date and an inexcusable delay adds a premium surcharge.
