What do I do after a car accident on a federal highway in Brazil?
The Ministry of Transport says that on a federal highway with no one hurt, the people involved fill in the traffic accident declaration, the DAT, online with the Federal Highway Police, within 180 days. The person who fills it in is over 18, or legally emancipated. Call 191 and give the highway, the kilometre, a landmark, whether anyone is hurt, and whether the road is blocked. On a toll highway, also call that road's user service. If someone is hurt or has died, or the crash involves a dangerous product or damage to the environment, the Federal Highway Police write the accident report. Do not move the people who are hurt.
