What is the social electricity tariff in Brazil?
The mines and energy ministry says the social electricity tariff, inside the Luz do Povo programme, makes the tariff free for monthly use up to 80 kWh for four groups. Those groups are families on CadÚnico with income up to half a minimum wage per person, people aged 65 or older and people with a disability who receive the continuous cash benefit, families on CadÚnico with income up to three minimum wages who have a member needing electrical medical equipment, and Indigenous and quilombola families on CadÚnico in that half-minimum band. The grant is automatic when the household record is current and the bill holder fits one of those groups, and use above 80 kWh is charged only on the extra units.
